Hold Music More Interesting Than Dell Technician
SCOTTVILLE, MI - 2004-12-06
BY KEVIN GERHART NULLSET NEWS STAFF WRITER - MIDWEST BUREAU
After an hour-long technical support telephone call with a phenomenally uninteresting Dell technician, the mood and attitude of Kevin Gerhart, computer technician for the Mason County Central School District, improved greatly when he was placed on hold.
“This guy was terrible!” Gerhart ranted. “Extremely lame small talk while he waited for his database to tell him what to do, comments about the weather; it was pretty sad! I guess I should be grateful that I got an American and not some guy from Outer Mongolia who can barely speak English. But it was still an hour of my life wasted!"
Gerhart’s demeanor took a positive turn at the 57-minute mark, when the Dell technician requested to put Gerhart on hold to speak with his supervisor about the warranty parts in question.
After being assured by the automated announcer that indeed, “[my] call was important to [them]” the hold music resumed. “Oops, I Did it Again” was then played over Gerhart’s speakerphone. Driven to the limits of his patience, Gerhart began to engage in some mutant form of dancing, apparently in an effort to hold off mounting hysteria and frustration.
“OK! I’ll admit it! I was grooving to Britney Spears on-hold music!” Gerhart exclaimed. “There is no shame in that! I was desperate! I was in danger of going crazy! It’s not like I was busting a funky move over here or anything!”
MCC students passing by Gerhart’s office reported that he was indeed engaged in grooving of some form.
“It was pretty strange,” high school senior Remington Greiner commented. “I was walking to my car and just happened to glance over at Kevin’s office. Through the window I could see him sort of half-dancing. He was seated in his office chair, rolling it around the room and - I don’t know, dancing! It was kind of disturbing.”
“Show me the Meaning of Being Lonely” by the Backstreet Boys followed “Oops, I Did it Again,” but was fortunately interrupted by the technician returning to the line to complete the support call.

Wow, last time I called Dell's slightly substandered tech-support I just got some generic light-jazz. I much rather would have heard the early '00 pop you did Kev.

Grooving? Kevin? - 12/06/2004 10:45:13AM CST (12/06/2004 11:45:13AM EST)

As 2 of 6 said, the Deacon Board and the Pastoral staff are not going to look fondly on this, Kevin. But what really amazes me is that anyone who goes to Cornerstone Baptist Church with the sincerity that Kevin does would even know HOW to have a dance party!

Longest...article gap...EVER. - 12/06/2004 10:58:40AM CST (12/06/2004 11:58:40AM EST)

Well, a quick check of the archives page has determined that we here at the Nullset may have reached the pinnacle of our laziness up to this point. The wait between this, our newest article, and the last one "Chad Gets Married - Brotherhood Mourns Loss" is no less than three weeks and two days - from November 12 to December 6.
At this rate, it won't be long before we're taking the site down for months at a time out of sheer apathy and laziness. Er. Did I just say that? Nobody like Mike heard that, right?

Been there buddy... Who wants to sit still and wait for a dell technician to tell you what you DON'T want to hear? At least you can increase your cultural awareness by listening to what is (was) popular music. I haven't tried it, but I've heard that some people enjoy that sort of thing.

Dell's Tips - 12/06/2004 03:06:51PM CST (12/06/2004 04:06:51PM EST)

I have to agree with everyone here, the music is the only good part of the call. Most of the times I spoke with a technician, always and Indian, it resulted in him, or her, telling me to do something completely dedundant, that I've already tried 3 times, such as "press the F7 key on the keyboard when the Windows is starting the boot". I had a programming teacher at CMU who could easy have gotten a job with Dell based solely on the fact that he couldn't speak english. Seriously guys, I swear this dude said "Golden Banana" like 5 times during our first class.

hold music experience - 12/06/2004 04:07:29PM CST (12/06/2004 05:07:29PM EST)

My favorite experience with the hold music was when I called SonicEloctronix, a respected dealer of quality car audio products, to inquire about a cd player that I was prepared to make a $150 investment in. I was placed on hold (naturally) and spent the next 5 minutes listening to monophonic symphony music. Yes, monophonic like an eight year old nokia cellphone.

I`m sorry, but did mine eyes decieve me, or did Kevin just make a shoutback to the Young MC up there? Haha!! Oh and yes, I did also try getting a job once back in the day at [Major Company Technical Support Center], but was turned away because I could not fake a thick enough Indian accent, and because they didnt believe that my last name `Nayeenanajar`. Ahh well. What ya gonna do...

Ahh.. I remember back in the days of Moody, I actually called up one of the busy offices on campus just to get put on hold so I could listen to some good christmas music. I then found a way to hook the phone up to my computer speakers. You just gotta find the right hold music...

11 comments in the span of 2 days... I think Jordan's Beard's observation definitely highlights how dangerously close the Nullset readership came to mutiny. All that pent-up energy built up to a feverish pitch. Thank goodness Kevin saved the day with this unsettling experience with early 2000 pop music on Dell's support line.

How could you go so low as to dance to britany? Thats just stupid! I admit, i would probably start singing to it to mutilate the song because i know i cant sing, but i wouldnt dance to it, i would say thats about as low as you can get. Sorry kevin. I would have just put my own music on just to cover that up.
