Braving The Storm: Hurricane Ivan
ORANGE BEACH, AL - 2004-09-16
BY RECOVERING HURRICANE VICTIM MIKE MALBURG
Well as many of you may know from watching the news, a big bad hurricane has passed over my new hometown of Orange Beach, Alabama. There were many people that ran scared fom this hurricane, just because of some silly "mandatory evacuation" that was in effect from the governor. Ha! "Mandatory Evacuation."
Many people did leave southern Alabama because they were all scared that Ivan would hurt them. But not me. Though I wasn't literally there when Ivan HIT, per se. I mean, I did forget some hurricane supplies in Ludington, Michigan, so I did kinda had to leave a couple days before the hurricane hit to get my favorite hurricane flashlight and hurricane blanket which just happened to be left at my parents house 1100 miles away to the north. And of course, I did pack all of my earthly belongings in my car just in case I needed to use any of them on the trip to Ludington.
Once in Ludington, there really was no time to lose by driving all the way back to Alabama. Ivan is a FIERCE storm and I knew I would just have to bunker down right then and there and tough out the storm from Ludington.
Waves of nearly 25 to 30 centimeters were reported on Lake Michigan, no doubt part of the storm surge from Ivan the Terrible. There were also torrential rains reported in Ludington Wednesday night, which was due to the deadly outer ring of Ivan which brought us several tenths of an inch of rain by the end of the night. Winds reached near-hurricane force as thousands of pieces of loose debris which consisted mostly of grains of sand whipped over the local state park dunes.
Overall, we hurricane victims in Ludington were pretty lucky. The damage could have been a LOT worse. As it is now well into Thursday morning, experts are still surveying the damage. If the experts are not too lazy, we will bring you some photos of the extensive damage that this hurricane caused to the residents of Ludington, Michigan.

I suffered a great deal from the horrible storm known to man as Ivan. Just the last night horrible magnetic interference from the hurricane cause my wireless mouse to suddenly and unexpectedly cease operation. Attempts at changing the batteries, reconnecting various cords, pushing various buttons and violently smashing said mouse against my desk were all in vain. Ivan has claimed another victim.

Those who were almost lost - 11/16/2004 04:52:42AM CST (11/16/2004 05:52:42AM EST)

Yeah, when the hurricane hit on Wednesday, I thought for a minute that a shingle was gonna blow off the roof of my house. That, and although Mike called me that afternoon, he must have been nearly killed by Ivan, since he couldn't be contacted at all for the rest of the day. By any means. At all. In fact, this article is the only proof that I've had at all that he's alive since Ivan hit.
That, and I saw a mini-return of Hurricane Charlie when his mouse crapped out last night.

The effects of Hurricane Ivan on Allendale - 09/17/2004 07:21:41PM CST (09/17/2004 08:21:41PM EST)

As the title of this post suggests, I have suffered here in Allendale...and far worse that you babies in Ludville.
At the moment I am writing and a fierce water is smashing against my window and distint intervals. Some people say it is the misplaced sprinkler in my yard, but I disagree.

Hurricane Ivan struck Holland! - 09/17/2004 07:26:02PM CST (09/17/2004 08:26:02PM EST)

Hurricane Ivan struck Holland the same time Dorothy Gale, from Allendale felt its effects. I have heard a lot of cracking sounds and perhaps shattered glass, which had to have been from stuff blowing around and definitely NOT people throwing frisbees around and hitting the buildings. If only Hurricane Ivan could stop those stupid freight trains!

Well, I'm back in Alabama and can't sleep. While Michigan was feeling the fierce effects of Ivan the Terrible, there must have been a bunch of crazy vandals out on the loose in Lower Alabama and the Florida panhandle tearing shingles and siding off houses and bending and breaking trees all along the road in lower Alabama. That and shearing some buildings completely in half and piling boats on top of each other. Luckily though, aside from all the billions of dollars of damage the vandals did, I see no real effects of Ivan yet in lower Alabama.

Violent Vandals - 09/20/2004 07:12:25PM CST (09/20/2004 08:12:25PM EST)

The vandals took all of my apartment's exterior doors off, broke all the lights in my house, drenched the floor and ceiling, ripped the room off and spread all my insulation through the parking lot of my apartment complex.....I mean SERIOUSLY.....WHO STEALS INSULATION. Well not to fear the internet is still operational at a temporary house full of insulation....and power....and an internet connection....which I dont need because I am of course the internet..but I thought I better get online since other people want to use me and everything...... Anyway I understand V01D's concern over the vandals, I would go catch them myself but I cannot move because I am the internet and I am not a "real person" with "real legs" to chase them and "real arms" to beat the hell out of them.
Hugs and Kisses
